About Stanford-Tuck Fighters Bandits Squadrons

About the author of www.stanfordtuck.com

My name is Peter and I am the author and owner of www.stanfordtuck.com.
I have been interested in World War II since I was a child. What I remember very well was seeing the three hours enduring movie "the longest day" at the age of eight or nine. Reading lots of books about that period and it must be at the same age when I found an American helmet from WWII in a German forest, in the Ardennes forest. It is still in my possesion. This was the beginning of my interest in WWII.
With this website, I have tried to make a digital memorial for all the pilots who sacrificed themselves on the altar of freedom during the battle of Britain and other theaters of war. In my opinion, the memories to these brave men will stand the test of time and honor forever the fallen of this war and possibly all wars.
With the evolution of the internet I found a lot of useful information and I could fullfill my dream to make a website about the pilot of the book "fly for your life". I read the Dutch translation years ago (also as a young boy) which I must have read more then ten times over and over again. Specially when I was planning to visit the UK a couple of years ago. In the book I have searched for all the stations that are mentioned and tried to find them on the map. I went to Duxford and to Biggin Hill and to Nordholt, the Whiteheart... it is so impressive to visit the place where Robert was stationed. By seeing the UK the puzzle of what I had in mind and what I read in the book felt together. When I was driving on the highway to Duxford I got one the greatest experiences in my life. Suddenly, there was a Spitfire (!) taking of right above the highway. So I gave a little bit more gas because I did not want to loose it out of sight. By entering Duxford I saw the two-seater Spitfire. The sound and the view of this Spitfire is really amazing. Hearing is believing.
In 2000 I was happy to meet the Stanford-Tuck family. In the face of the two sons I could see the face of their father. When I entered the room I see three big suitcases full of photo's and documents. First I sorted all the photos in category pre-war, war and post war. I have seen many original documents and pictures, including the one that was taken at Stalag Luft III with Roger Bushell. I have scanned almost all pictures that are from pre-war and war era. Newest addition is a photo of Tuck's crashed Spitfire laying in a salvage yard. This is a great addition to the photo's I have scanned of Tuck's crashed Spitfire near Boulogne, taken by the Germans.

I have started this website after the summer-break of 2000 and was operational in january 2001. I hope you enjoy visiting my website about this magnificent pilot.

The prisma book on the left is the Dutch version of "Fly for your life", which is translated in Dutch into "de onsterfelijke piloot" (the immortal pilot). My father read it when he was young, then my older brother Ronald and after him I found it in the bookshelf. I also have the English version, but did not manage to start reading it.

Kind regards and enjoy visiting the website,

Peter
