Jozef Israels, 1824,Groningen - 1911, DenHaag
On the coast road
Olie on panel 40 x 28 cm.
Painted about 1875

Jozef Israels get a part of his training in Paris under Picot, in that time he painted mostly historical and romatic subjects. After a visit to Zandvoort,a primitive fishers village at the Nordsea, in 1855 let him change his subjects entirely. Now most of his paintings shows us the way of life of the fisher population along the coast of the Nordsea. The painting exhibited in our web-site is a nice example of this period, here the brushstrokes are delicate and the figures are nicely grouped.
