Jacob Maris, s'-Gravenhage,1837 - 1899,Karlsbad
Vieuw on Amsterdam?
Oil on canvas 68 x 127 cm
Signed bottom right: J Maris
Painted about 1880
Jacob Maris often painted cities but they seldom had such a large size. Most of the city outskirt was not original but a combination of some items. In this painting the harbour has some resemblance with old Amsterdam but the arangement of the churches is not correct.
The style is traditional with a grey haze over the water, this in strict accordance with the tradition of the Hague School.
