Gustave De Smet, Gent, 1877 - Deurle, 1943

Houses at the " Nieuwe Zijds Voorburgwal 589"
Oil on canvas 67 x 41 cm
Signed Lower right: Gustave de Smet
Painted in 1915
The painting demonstrates the early expressionistic tendens mingled with some cubistic elements. The colors are contrasting and a little abberant. The composition is fading away of most of the realistic basics. Maybe there is some slight influence of the work of Breitner famous for his townvieuws of Amsterdam.
