De Smet is painting his wife in a technical difficult position of incoming light. He is still using a certain divistionistic technique to have a better three-dimensional effect. The contrasting colors in the background give a very vivid supplement of the very strong composition. The artist manufatured the painting during his stay in England, in that time he got much important assigments by famous English citizens such as Bernard Shaw.
