Charley Toorop,1891 - 1955

The old Farmers wife
Oil on canvas 100 x 80 cm.
Signed lower right: Charley Fernhout-Toorop 1915

Painted in a period that the painter was deeply influenced by the german expressionism e.g. by Kadinsky. The flowers and vase at the right site of the painting and the total composition are a example of the style. The colors are moderate and simple. The perspective is strong by the nice projection through the window of the garden-view. There is fine contrast between the flowers and figure of the miformed woman. There is hardly no symbolism.
